¿Sabes cuál es la manera de que tus hijos viajen más seguros en el coche? A contramarcha. ¿Sabes por qué? ¿Te lo has planteado alguna vez? ¿Algo has oído, pero no tienes ni idea de los motivos? ¿Desconfías porque crees que es una moda?
El porqué desde el punto de vista físico
Los niños necesitan un sistema de retención infantil (silla de coche) adecuado a sus características porque no son adultos en miniatura. ¡Son muy diferentes a nosotros! Vamos a ver algunas de sus diferencias:
- La proporción de la cabeza. Hasta los 3 años la cabeza de un niño representa entre el 20 y el 25% de su peso corporal total, mientras que en el adulto es el 6%. Si nos imaginamos unas proporciones parecidas a las suyas en un adulto, seríamos como extraterrestres. Os dejo una imagen para que podías verlo más claro.
- Sistema esquelético en pleno desarrollo. Los huesos de los bebés y niños (aproximadamente hasta los 4 años) tienen un gran componente cartilaginoso, debido a que están en formación. Sus vértebras cervicales están compuestas por tres porciones de hueso unidas por cartílago. Estas uniones no se convierten en anillo cervical completo de hueso hasta, aproximadamente, los 3-6 años (este proceso, en realidad, no se completará hasta la pubertad).
Todo esto hace que la protección de la médula espinal y la vascularización que pasa por dentro del canal medular sea poco eficaz en casos de fuertes tracciones.
Qué ocurre en los accidentes frontales, los más comunes y peligrosos
Así que, ahora que sabéis esto, pensad en un accidente, el más común, frontal. Si alguna vez habéis tenido un susto de este tipo, habréis podido comprobar la fuerza con la que la cabeza sale despedida hacia delante.
Imaginad que vuestro cuerpo está retenido por un arnés y lo único que sale disparado es esa cabeza enorme, con unas vértebras frágiles. ¿Resultado?
- Control motor inmaduro. En los primeros años de vida aprendemos a dominar y controlar nuestro cuerpo frente a acciones voluntarias o también en situaciones inesperadas en las que necesitamos que nuestro cuerpo reaccione de manera rápida y autónoma. Este proceso no se hace de la noche a la mañana, conlleva una maduración, es largo. Esto hace que cuando los niños son pequeños sus reacciones sean lentas y con poca precisión, con lo que ante un accidente no podrá reaccionar tensando su musculatura para protegerse.
- Los adultos tenemos huesos en el tórax totalmente osificados y rígidos, que en caso de impacto se rompen. Los bebés tienen un porcentaje muy alto de cartílago y ante un impacto o presión se doblan ejerciendo daños muy graves a los órganos internos.
- El centro neurálgico de la respiración está más bajo porque los pulmones todavía no están desarrollados y la zona abdominal es más grande en comparación con la de un adulto. Así que ejercer cualquier tipo de presión en esta zona puede resultar mortal.
- El cerebro está “suspendido” dentro del cráneo y rodeado de las meninges que también están en pleno desarrollo, protegiéndolo de manera más ineficaz que el de un adulto.
- Las vías aéreas son proporcionalmente más pequeñas y blandas, haciendo que sea más fácil que se colapsen.
El porqué desde el punto de vista estadístico
Las estadísticas nos dicen que los impactos más frecuentes en un accidente son los FRONTALES. Siempre que hay un accidente uno de los coches implicados ha tenido un choque frontal, con lo que, si hacemos estadística, tenemos un resultado mayor para este tipo de impacto.
Y ¿qué pasa en este tipo de impactos?
Cuando nuestro hijo viaja a favor de la marcha y tenemos un impacto frontal, el cuerpo por inercia seguiría avanzando, pero al tener el arnés que retiene su cuerpo, la cabeza sale proyectada hacia delante. Si además le añadimos que su cabeza pesa el 25% del total de su peso y que está sujeta por un sistema musculoesquelético inmaduro, que no puede contrarrestar esta gran fuerza a la que es sometido, sabemos que las consecuencias que tendremos son:
- El cerebro impactará en el interior del cráneo por la parte anterior y posterior siguiendo los movimientos de la cabeza en el momento del impacto.
- Las cervicales son arrastradas por la cabeza y con ellas también la médula espinal y todo el paquete vascular que contienen, pudiéndose alargar hasta los 5 cm con dos posibles consecuencias: una luxación de las dos primeras vértebras y/o una sección medular (que se da a partir de los 2 cm de elongación cervical), dando lugar a lesiones neurológicas severas.
La fuerza de tracción a la que se puede someter unas cervicales en un niño hasta los 4 años es de 130 kg como máximo. Hoy en día ya tenemos muchos estudios que nos demuestran que viajando a favor de la marcha se puede llegar a 250 kg. Una cifra muy superior a lo que hemos citado anteriormente. En cambio, viajando a contramarcha, la cifra se mueve entre 30 y 60 kg. ¿Es bastante claro, no?
Además, hay que tener también en cuenta:
- El abdomen: los órganos vitales están protegidos por las costillas, unos huesos aún inmaduros (blandos) que no pueden absorber el impacto y lo que hacen es ceder a la presión del arnés y pasar la presión directamente a los órganos internos.
- Las extremidades: pueden resultar afectadas por el impacto contra elementos del coche.
Por tanto, si tenemos un impacto frontal viajando a favor de la marcha, aunque sea a poca velocidad, tenemos muchas posibilidades de sufrir consecuencias graves ya que el cuerpo del niño no está preparado.
¿Se puede reducir la gravedad de las lesiones?
Al principio os hablaba de que viajar a contramarcha no es una moda, es cuestión de física. Pues ¡vamos a ver porqué! Las leyes de la física nos dicen que si ponemos la silla a contramarcha, las fuerzas ejercidas por un impacto frontal son absorbidas por el respaldo del dispositivo de retención y se reparten de manera homogénea por toda la cabeza, cuello y torso disminuyendo así la posibilidad de sufrir lesiones graves, ya que todo el cuerpo queda recogido por la silla.
Además, el bebé o niño pequeño sufre menos modificaciones posturales y se reduce la presión del abdomen durante el impacto, reduciendo así también las posibilidades de padecer lesiones. ¿Has visto alguna vez el amerizaje de un astronauta? Os invito a que utilicéis Google y encontraréis fotos suyas a contramarcha.
Después de toda esta explicación, creo que queda bastante claro que las sillas a contramarcha no solo se diseñaron para retener sino para evitar o reducir lesiones. ¡Que es lo más importante!
Sí, todo esto está muy bien, «pero mi hijo ya es mayor para ir a contramarcha». Los niños deberían viajar a contramarcha desde que son recién nacidos hasta que ya no haya más posibilidades.
